About
Brighton & Hove Community Reporters gives a voice to people from all parts of the community, so that they can tell their stories and share their news, opinions and information. The project has three goals:
- To help promote community cohesion by sharing stories and encouraging links between people from different parts of the community
- To help improve the quality of news and information being reported from within local communities
- To help people from marginalised communities to share their stories
This could include people who contribute to their local community newsletter or community websites, community activists who report on local issues, local news reporters and the many other people who want to share news and views about what’s going on in their community.
The project does not focus on the use of specific media. We want to help reporters to tell their story in whatever suits their needs. This could include:
- their own website/blog,
- local community newsletter,
- a local or national newspaper or magazine,
- a radio or TV station,
- Youtube
- podcasts
We are standing on the shoulders of Peoples Voice Media in Manchester, who are helping us to export their community reporter goodness from up north to sunny Brighton & Hove. We are hoping to emulate their success in building a range of learning opportunities and creating a vibrant network of reporters from across the city.
Between now and April 2010 we are running a series of Taster Sessions and building up a network or people interested in becoming Community Reporters. We are also building links with local media partners and working with community partners to make sure we reach into communities of all kinds across the city.
